Almost a year ago, in September 2018, Insomniac Games launched “Marvel’s Spider-Man”, the successful video game for the PS4 based on the popular Marvel character, which has already sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.
The game was praised by critics and audiences, something that has not gone unnoticed in the industry. Although Sony had already made previous collaborations with this studio, the technology giant has decided to go a step further and has announced the acquisition of Insomiac Games. The Californian studio founded in 1994, is also responsible for other successful games for PS4 such as “Spyro the Dragon ” or “Ratchet & Clank”, although they have also worked for other platforms, such as “Sunset Overdrive”, an action Xbox One exclusive game also released on PC.
The announcement has been a real shock in the sector, and with this movement Sony avoids the possible purchase of the studio by Microsoft, who has been acquiring a large number of small or independent studios during the last few years.
Insomniac Games will become part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and because of how little is known so far, it seems that it will develop exclusive video games for the PS4 console.
Both Shawn Layden, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, and Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games, have rated Sony’s acquisition of the studio very positively, arguing that it will provide the opportunity for both parties to expand horizons and offer new experiences to the players.
Under the agreement, Insomniac Games will be incorporated into Sony’s parent company, but will keep its structure intact to continue working as before. Thanks to the means that Sony can provide to this group of developers, the expectations of what is to come are quite high, and although there is still no official confirmation, it is very likely that one of the next titles that are announced is a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man exclusive for PS4.
